For 14 months I cared for an elderly gentleman. In the beginning it was primarily companion care, making sure he ate, had clean laundry, bathed and got out of the house for lunch or a drive. He suffered from ALS and he declined over the last 12 months to the point of requiring complete care, including a catheter, feeding tube, oxygen, bathing, doctor's appointments, hospital runs, and more. His children lived out of town so his full-time care fell eventually to 2 full time caregivers (myself and one other) and 5 night caregivers. He was cared for in his own home until his death at age 87 on Dec. 8, 2017.
I previously helped care for an 88-year-old woman following a hip replacement. I was a nanny for 7 years, as well as having cared for both of my parents towards the end of their lives. My mother was a geriatric nurse and director of a nursing home for many years, allowing me to shadow her on many occasions. I am good with all ages, and love to interact with seniors and children alike.
