Companion Care Needed For My Mother In Saint Louis - My Mom, 82, ...
$20 – $20/hr • Part time • Starts May 29 • Saint Louis, MO
About who needs care: My Mom, 82, has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's/dementia-- it has been gradually increasing over the last 5 years orso and we are getting to the point she may need some daily, weekly? watching, help, checking in on? She currently lives independently with her toy poodle and 2 cats in her own home, which is where I want to keep her, promised to keep her as long as possible, with her pets, in her own home. She is still driving -- for now-- to store and back, as that is where she knows how to get to currently. Driving may have to be taken away from her soon? She is not a social person, never really has been -- family social stuff and that is it, doesn't want a companion, but will need help shopping, going to appointments, checking to make sure she is loading her meds correctly for the week. I have talked to her about getting some assistance-- she remembers, briefly, then forgets, which is par for the course. She is open to help with shopping, vet appt etc, less open to hanging out with someone all day telling her what to do etc.. She does her thing, makes her own meals, lets the dog out. She is doing ok. She is doing all of that now, except appointments. I am coming in town to take her to appts and visit and will continue to do so or my brother has with her to appt. He does not drive. I live 3 hours away. My brother at least only lives a mile away, but is limited with his time. I am coming in town on my days off, splitting my days off between caring for my Dad and step mom, who just passed away last week after being in hospice the last 2 months, who is 3 hours north and mom -- who is 3hr south. I am in Champaign, Illinois. I am there every 2 weeks or so, but less recently. My recent time has been at my Dad's as I had to triage my time. Mom is stable, but really needs, will need, someone in addition to myself to help care give on a regular basis. I am not sure what that looks like, but would like to sit and meet with someone with my Mom so we can get a better idea of what we need as we move forward in this journey. I need to get an idea of the cost and what kind of help is available for us. I have sister too, who is 5 hours away from Mom, who also doesn't drive and is only able to help minimally. When the time comes Mom will move to be in Champaign by, with, me and my husband, who also travels to mom to help when needed -- whether that is assisted living, her own home here or something else, but I want to keep her in her own current space for as long as possible. Thank you, Kat
About the care needs: I think I covered most of this in my previous answer.
But my Mom is independent, not super social, is not thrilled about the idea of "hanging" out with someone, but knows her memory is going, her ability to drive safely is diminishing-- as she is limited with to her navigation skill, her sense of direction is waning. Someone who is quiet, someone who drives-- that can help take her to appointments if I can not make it in town, take her shopping, maybe get her out of the house if she wants to go do something? Mom is ambulatory, can take care of herself, feed and make her own meals, but does have some back/leg pain issues, that seem right now to be under control.
She is self sufficient, but I feel will need and extra set of eyes, an extra pair of hands as she progresses in her memory loss. Thank you, Kat
