Many of us desperately want to be there for our children and let them experience being little at home, but circumstances prevent us from being able to do so. I believe the next best thing is providing for them a loving and nurturing environment where they can grow, learn, and play with others -- preferably with a little more attention than being one in a class of 30. Those days will be here soon enough. I firmly believe children learn best through play. This generation of children seem to spend so much of their time with their eyes glued to the latest electronic gadget, and while they may be learning great hand/eye coordination skills, it is often at the expense of their social, emotional, physical, or intellectual development. Children at play are learning so much without even realizing it spatial relationships, creative thinking, social skills and language, motor skills, gathering information through their senses, and learning to find joy in their own and each other s company. Through happy and healthy play, children begin a love of learning and prepare for life itself. At Sugarboot, we spend our days up to our elbows in playdoh, craft projects, and baking. We play outside whenever possible, take walks, and visit the playground. We dance, play instruments and sing silly songs. We take time to focus on our letters and numbers, shapes, colors, drawing, cutting and pasting. We dress up in fancy costumes and read lots of books together. I believe in relationships - with the children, their parents, and the children with each other. Children are unique individuals, with different needs, talents, insecurities, and gifts. The world is a little harsher of a place than when we were growing up. My goal is to create a safe and innocent place for them to just be themselves, and hopefully build some happy memories in the process.
