I started tutoring when my sons were young. I knew how to make reading, writing and arithmetic accessible and rewarding. that was 20 years ago. I now apply my skills to elementary students in the Salinas area. I have a specialized strategy to help students make progress and become excited to learn. I have worked at Santa Rita Elementary School for the past eight years. I have taught students to read who spoke no English. We start with the alphabet and learn the sounds. then we move on to the Bob Books. The first book has minimal words and sounds. as students learn t sounds they progress in the books. Students are so excited when they read the first book of eight pages! We work intensely for 20 minutes. Then we do a fun activity like Legos or playdo. every session is timed so the student does not become worried or stressed. Students receive a prize at the end of the lesson. I strategize so that the student achieves a measure of success in each lesson.
