Ever since I was a young child, I always had a deep sense of respect for my elders and as I grew older, this respect continued to grow and I developed an even deeper desire to care for them. After spending over 270 hours with elderly patients in the medical-surgical unit hospital setting, I have developed a special place in my heart for the elderly. I was working at the hospital as a part of my clinical hours for nursing school, and during that time I provided care expected of a nurse/CNA such as taking vital signs, providing bed baths, assisting with activities of daily living, walking with patients, performing head-to-toe assessments, administering medication (both oral and parenteral) under supervision of RN, monitoring intake and output, providing therapeutic communication with patients, performing blood glucose monitoring, IV starts and therapy, and educating patients regarding plan of care, medications, and discharge. I believe in the importance of caring for the elderly with dignity and respect and I believe that my past experience makes me qualified to do so.
