University Of Arizona Student Willing To Help Care And Give Time To Senior Citizens
This semester, I volunteered at the Jewish Community Center with a program called Elder Rehabilitation. In this program, I work with a 93-year-old woman who suffered from a stroke and now, bound to a wheelchair. J. and I are very different. She was a maid and a housewife most of her adult life and grew up in upstate New York. She listens to different music, reads different books, and watches different movies. Yet somehow, J. and I work in sync every week, when I come in to help her memory and physical impairment. In every session, I help her exercise, as if I were her personal trainer. I also try to help improve her memory and cognition with puzzles. J. and I have the same common goal- we want her to be healthy enough to play with her grandchildren. It is perhaps because our goals are about the collective happiness of us and the people around us that we get along so well. We love to share stories of our families, friends, and watch the daycare children.
