His musical influences include Charles Mingus, Charlie Parker, and Vulfpeck. Mateo's favorite thing about music is being able to express emotions without words, and his favorite thing about teaching music is continuing to learn alongside his students. One of his favorite teaching experiences was coaching high school students in the Washington High School marching band.
