Roots and Wings Family Childcare

86 Johnson Rd Columbia, CT

Our Mission This business provides care for children in a small home-based setting. We believe that a family style environment is beneficial for young children as it enables them to develop an attachment to just one trusted caregiver as opposed to the revolving staff turnover that occurs in larger child care facilities which can lead to feelings of abandonment and insecurity in children. It is also beneficial to parents because they know that with one person providing consistent care for their child, miscommunication between staff will not be an issue. In addition, this type of setting allows for a mixed-age group of children to receive care together, which is ideal for families with siblings. Our Philosophy I believe that a parent's role is vital in the life of a child. As a working parent myself, I understand the tug on a parent's heart when they must leave their child in the care of someone else. That's why I believe it is so important to develop a trusting relationship with your child's caregiver and to have that assurance that they will support you in the goals you have for your child and communication is key to that. Children are born with an inherent ability to trust and a curiosity about the world around them. My goal is to encourage that trust and curiosity so they can develop self confidence and dare to reach for their dreams-thus the name Roots and Wings. Let the roots of love and trust go down deep thus enabling them to have wings of confidence to fly.

I provide a developmentally appropriate environment for children of varying ages. I earned a bachelors degree in Early Childhood Development, have taught preschool - grade 4, and had been doing in home childcare for 7 years, before moving to CT in 2013. I believe children flourish in a safe, comfortable atmosphere where they are free to explore, discover and create. We spend lots of time outside. We make messes and create art. We explore letters and numbers in a way that allows children to naturally learn at their own pace. We have fun with music and movement.

Did Speech Therapy work one on one for two years with boys who had no speech or real efforts to communicate. Planned and implemented daily speech work beginning with the vocal sounds the child make on a regular basis. I came up with the idea of utilizing mirrors to help the child form words with their mouth. Starting with the vocal sounds they could make, I used flash cards displaying pictures of objects that began with the vocal sound to reinforce the use of that sound as part of a word. This was very rewarding for the child. Reinforced the vocal theme with music, toys, puzzles and all tools we used until the next sound or letter was introduced. Taught location themes: above, below, behind, in, on, next to with the use of favorite toys. Taught basic numbers and letters math and writing skills. Responsibilities included potty training, teaching to feed themselves, and encouraging trying and eating new foods. Body motor skills: teaching to throw and kick a ball, ride a tricycle, run, and swing, weekly swimming lessons. Fine motor skills were taught with use of coloring, play dough, cutting, pasting, stringing beads and sand and water play. I am a small in home daycare, licensed by the state of Connecticut. I have medication certified and CPR First aide certified. My belief system is that children are capable of amazing things when provided with an environment that nurtures their desire to learn and be independent. I love watching children explore nature while we spend quite a bit of time outdoors (dependent on weather) and inside exploration working on colors, numbers, matching, coloring, scissor skills. I'm all for messy play with play doh, paint and anything that inspires little kids.
