Senior Care/Experienced

I have been a caregiver/Home Health Aide for seniors for 12 years. I working as a caregiver I have given showers, bed bath's, shampoo's, depending on the person's needs. I have prepared meals, at times family left meals prepared. So I heated meals added vegetables and if possible some fruit or desert. I assisted patients to the bathroom, did range of motion assistance. In patients who were diabetics or had restriction. I made sure all carb intakes were not exceeded and meals were designed for a diabetic. All linens were changed as needed, making sure creases in the sheets were as minimal as possible in order to prevent bed sores. Socializing with the elderly was of essence, therefore, I engaged them in some older movies. I also played music which stimulated the elderly. I have enjoyed working with the elderly and the person who originally was an influence to me was my grandmother. The elderly often suffer from dry skin, more so during the cold months. So I have made sure I applied plenty of lotion or what was recommended by family or their medical doctors. Water has been a great intake for many of our elderly. They are very fragile and become dehydrated very easily so I give them water, juices and any other fluids provided to the patient. Making sure that the patient is not having problems with constipation makes a huge difference in a patient's behavior. When they become impacted or are not voiding on a regular basis, I report it to the person who oversees the person. In the past, I have experienced having to call an ambulance and rush the patient to the emergency room. The results usually were UTI's or abstrated bowels. This is the number one reason I push fluids, fruits and vegetables the best I can into the elderly. Socialization has been another asset the elderly needs, so I talk with the patient. Making sure never to cross boundaries nor discuss any of my personal life. I made sure the patient received plenty of sleep, even a short nap every now and then.
