We had a great experience with Home Care Assistance's Lake Oswego, Oregon office. It was a very stressful situation: my father-in-law was having a precipitous decline and was being discharged from the hospital to home on hospice; however, a hospice nurse only comes once a day, and we needed a lot more help than that. I called Home Care Assistance (and a lot of other places) at 7:00 PM on a Thursday, Elsa (the owner) called me back at 8:00 PM that night, and Elsa went to the hospital to do an evaluation at 8:30 Friday morning. My father-in-law was discharged to my home at 4:00 PM on Friday, and Elsa was here with care staff at 8:00 PM Friday night. We had 24-hour care from Friday until he passed away the following Monday evening. During that time, we had the same two folks throughout; they were cordial, polite, sensitive, competent, and extremely skilled. Cora (who was with us on day shift) was so good about taking things off of our plate, but not disrupting our ability to care for him. Sarah (who was with us at night) was thoughtful and conscientious; we had a baby monitor on so we could hear if my father-in-law needed anything, and we could hear her throughout the night checking in with him, asking if he needed anything, and helping managing his pain. A particularly important moment came on Monday morning (he passed away that evening), when the scheduled day shift person called in sick; Sarah had been there all night, but she stayed so that we would not be alone. Then Cora, who was not supposed to be with us that day, changed her schedule so that she could be with us at the end. It was wonderful support in a difficult time, and I cannot recommend Home Care Assistance highly enough.
