SHINE is a licensed child care center designed to meet the educational, social, physical and spiritual needs of school-aged children. It is structured to give children time for homework, enrichment, social interaction, and active and creative play. We have locations in Silver Spring and Germantown, MD.
SHINE was founded in 1997 as an extension of Camp Sonshine to fill the need for a structured, caring environment for school aged children in the community surrounding Immanuel's Church. Each afternoon, children are able to work on school work with qualified group leaders, play exciting activities, and release their stored up energy from the day.
The quality of the SHINE staff is very important so we can ensure your child's safety and general well-being daily. SHINE always maintains the state standard of a 1:15 staff to child ratio and typically upholds a 1:10 ratio.
Every staff member must meet the high Maryland State Department of Education standards including a criminal background check, previous training, and experience working with school-aged children in addition to our specific SHINE standards. Several staff members are certified in CPR and First Aid, others are currently earning degrees in education or child development, and most have been summer staff at Camp Sonshine.
