In high school, I noticed many of my peers would struggle with reading and turn to different outlets such as sports. With the help of my teachers, I started a book club, reading and discussing a few chapters every week to prepare for the ACT reading section. I worked with my classmates to create other approaches to read dense material. I used games with reading comprehension balls to make our meetings more engaging and retain their interest.
During college, I continued to find ways to help others overcome academic challenges and became involved with the San Antonio Youth Literacy organization. I worked with children in ESL classes to create exciting approaches to improve their reading abilities. In school, I became a teaching assistant for basic chemistry and general chemistry and would work with students who toiled with everything from language barriers to creating more effective studying techniques, such as color-coded charts and writing biology notes to the tune of top 40 songs!
