About Mercedes

Hello!! I am an elementary school teacher and I am passionate about teaching phonics to struggling readers by accessing the whole brain and using the science of reading, enriching already fluent readers, and making math concepts come to life. I am currently a first grade teacher in Fairfax County. I have also taught 3rd grade and won New Teacher of the Year for Henrico County. I am committed to turning students into scholars and helping them grow in confidence as well as ability. This year, my students saw an average of over 150% growth in reading and math. Last year, my students made over 250% average growth. Additionally, 20/20 students passed their Reading and Math state tests in a classroom with diverse learning profiles, with 17/20 scoring in the advanced range. I have also tutored kindergarten, first, second, third, and fourth graders after school hours. Let me know if you are interested!
