I value the teacher-student relationship first and foremost as the agent of change for inspiring a love of learning. I want my students to feel capable, empowered, and understood after a session and like they have the tools they need to succeed. I don't teach the subject -- I'm teaching them how to learn and think critically. I've had my frustrations, both as a student and an educator, when teachers assume the student's knowledge only for them to end up confused later down the line. I first question the student to get a sense of what they know. Then, we move into what exactly they struggle with. I believe that students are already capable of succeeding, it's a matter of using what they already know to help them get there. It's less top-down teacher-student instruction and more two people as equals approaching the problem together.
