My first private tutoring job was for a 3rd grade girl who was struggling with reading, writing, and math. Within a couple of weeks, meeting 2 times a week, she had made great improvements in reading because of the decoding strategies that I taught her. She also went from not knowing any of her math facts to knowing all of her addition and most of her subtraction facts within 3 weeks of meeting with her because of the games and other fun ways that I had her practice them. Instead of hating math and reading, she started to love both of these subjects and wanted to work on them first when I would come over. I tutored her until she was in 6th grade, when I moved after graduating from college. I have also tutored a 1st, 4th, 7th, and 8th grader (all from different families) in all subject areas, including Spanish. I am passionate about tutoring because I believe that all aspects of school should be fun for children. They should never feel like they "hate" a subject just because it is hard for them. All they need is someone who is good at explaining and teaching the content in fun ways to allow it to relate to their lives and really sink in.
