About who needs care: My son lives with cerebral palsy that affects both gross and fine motor skills as well as cognitive function. He loves socializing and music. He both works hard and jokes around. In an ideal day, he wakes up early, goes to his day program, comes home, changes clothes and has a snack, goes to various therapies (physical, occupational, music, counseling, etc.) and comes home to have a shower and dinner. He finds time to talk to friends on the phone, go the park for some exercise, or go have ice cream. He appreciates patience and positive interactions. About the care needs: An ideal caregiver would provide positive interactions. The caregiver would be willing to work with my son to practice skills in a way that is both patient and encouraging. The caregiver would need to be comfortable helping with personal care like changing clothes, showering, apply skin lotion, brushing teeth, etc. The caregiver will need to understand consent and communicate with my son during personal care situations. While my son can mostly transfer from his wheelchair to other seats (toilet, bed, car) on his own, he may need some physical support. My son needs someone who can take him to appointments which involves loading a wheelchair in and out of their own vehicle. Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, companionship, feeding, bathing / dressing, and mobility assistance.
