My goal always is and has been to make sure children leave my program equipped with all the skills they need for life and to be ready to enter a bigger classroom. I strive towards this goal by focusing on each child specifically. In my home, the kids have a safe place to be, something to eat, all of their needs met, plus all of the fun learning tools to have them ready for school and life. Family engagement is also very important to me. I love when parents come visit the program, whether they're coming to read or they have a special skill they can share with us. Overall, I want the child to get a holistic approach, so it's critical that what I'm doing in my program and what parents do at home support one another. One of my favorite activities that we do is a zoo day. Every summer, parents and children and I have lunch in the park, visit the zoo, and make a fun day out of it. At the end of the school year, we also will have parents come and enjoy some of my cooking. I try to do as much as I can to ease parents' minds and give them some fun too. What is NeighborSchools? I enjoy supporting my community and building relationships with the families that I serve. I have people who have moved on, even moved to different states, who still send me postcards and updates. My program isn't about babysitting, it's about having a positive impact on children and their parents. Building relationships is priceless to me, as well as ensuring that the kiddos are taken care of - happy, learning, and having fun! What is NeighborSchools? Something I love about children is how quickly they learn, and in how many different ways they do so. My goal is to teach them as opposed to simply watching them. I want them to be prepared to start school when they leave my program. I also enjoy feeling like a kid again when I'm with the children - they are so fun! I ensure they have a great time at my child care program, while learning a lot. At the end of the day, they know that I am taking care of them as if they were my own. What is NeighborSchools? During a typical day at Maria's Family Daycare, when the children arrive, I greet them and show them how to remove their jackets and wash their hands. I tell them to play for a few minutes while Ms. Maria gets breakfast ready, and when they are finished, we wash hands, and they go back to playing while I clean up. Then we do diaper changes and wash hands to get ready for circle time. We sing the ABCs and start the day by asking who knows what day it is. I have songs for each day of the week. We break for a few minutes and get the materials ready for the next activity of the day. After that, we clean up and do some body exercises - sometimes we do free play and other times we make a circle and start to dance. I observe the children during this time and take notes. I use a curriculum program called Curriculo de Primera Infancia. Days include science, math, music, and reading time, all of which are tailored to our theme of the day. For example, children use plastic scissors to try to cut paper and show what is around them, and in our community. I have lots of photos and clothes for dress up in the Dramatic Play area - along with fruits and vegetables. I also teach them about healthy habits and the parts of the body. I share different cultures through food, language and photos. At mealtime, I show them how to sit well and use good manners to chew with their mouths closed and use a napkin. I show them it is important to eat healthily. I also show them how to discard leftovers in the trash and that we don't touch anything else until hands are washed and we have brushed our teeth. I want to keep educating myself and incorporating the latest technology, lessons, and all of the new things that are coming out all the time about the development of children. I love helping the larger community within my home. I look forward to expanding my space over time and being able to teach many children over the years. We open at 7:30am and we begin the day with free play with a variety of toys. Then we clean up and wash hands and go potty before breakfast at 9am. We have a curriculum we follow to learn letters, numbers, colors, and shapes, before we go outside weather-permitting. We love to go out and be with mother nature whenever we can! After that, we come back in and wash up for snack time and prepare for circle time. We love circle time and reading stories. After that and some more free play, the children help with setting the table for lunch at noon, and help clean too. From 1 to 3pm we have nap time. For those children who don't rest, we have quiet play or we sit and chat quietly with each other. In the later afternoon we go outside once again weather-permitting and maybe go for a walk. Then we have puzzles, games, and singing until the kids have to clean up and get ready to go home for the night. It is a fun, packed day of learning and exploring for the children! There are many important aspects of Family Child Care to me. one is an engaging and development-oriented curriculum. This is enhanced by my learning of how to be a better educator. I am also incredibly attentive to healthy eating. I want to make sure the children are nurtured and that everyone is happy and smiling. I love that my program is family oriented. The children get the care and the love in a smaller group that they wouldn't necessarily be able to receive in a larger setting, yet the daycare center structure and philosophies are all still there. What is NeighborSchools? NeighborSchools helps experienced caregivers launch and operate licensed home daycares in Massachusetts. With better ratios and experienced caretakers, home daycare allows for more individualized attention for infants and toddlers. As a parent, you get a trusted partner for the long-term care of your child, right in your neighborhood, at a price you can afford.
