The tour begins with a ride through the Bywater and Marigny neighborhoods, home to history, art, and delightful shotgun houses. Your licensed tour guide will take you up Esplanade Ave, once known as “Creole Millionaires Row”. We’ll ride the oak lined avenue and marvel at the architecture, passing by Faubourg Treme and into Faubourg St. John. After a leisurely pedal through City Park, we’ll stop for a well-deserved break. Riders will have the opportunity to purchase beignets and café au lait at Cafe Du Monde. We then follow the trail of one of the oldest roads in the US - Bayou Road, the very reason New Orleans exists. Lastly we’ll pedal our way back through the historic French Quarter and the Marigny, admiring the sights along the way. Take your time enjoying the Oak Alley tour and exploring the Big House, grounds, slave cabins, exhibits, and café. Tour leaves from the Doubletree Hotel in the French Quarter. Learn about the Second Line & stroll down Basin Street to the remains of Storyville, fabled red light district whose parlors presented Buddy Bolden and Jelly Roll Morton. Then move through the Tango Belt to May Bailey’s and the French Opera House, ending with the legendary Preservation Hall.

The Mardi Gras School of Cooking does small, intimate hands-on classes in the French Quarter. Classes are more like a dinner party with friends. Feel welcomed into our kitchens by the Chefs themselves. From the moment you arrive until you roll out the door our Chefs are friendly, personable and entertaining. Not to mention their culinary skills are impeccable. Our minimum class size is 2 people. A solo traveler may join an already scheduled class. Call us to hear about the available classes. After flying over the French Quarter you will head back to Lakefront Airport, getting views from a distance of New Orleans City Park, the Fairgrounds, Dillard University and the Causeway Bridge.

The French brought the opera to New Orleans in the early 1800’s. This sophisticated music flourished here long before New York or any other city in North America. The free people of color introduced the harmony and spirituality of Sunday church music and the bordellos of Storyville led to music greats Buddy Bolden, Louis Armstrong and King Oliver. This evolved into the only true American music that was born in the gentlemen parlors of Treme and was called JAZZ.
