Hector Montesino has this already:
January 16, 2015
To whom it may concern:
The Garth family's experience with "Hector's team".
My Mom, Sarah Garth, was fiercely independent and recovered from two broken hips, one ten years ago and one in January 2014 (at age 96). Her goal both times was to get home and live independently again. After the fall in January Mom was in rehab in the Emerson TCU and then Rivercrest for 6 weeks before she came home to her Newbury Court apartment with an around the clock caregiver. This was before Hector arrived and formed his team. Starting Labor Day weekend Mom was able to live on her own again, with assistance bathing and dressing in the morning and evening from Ellen's team (Newbury Court Wellness Center). She did not get up without her walker and kept her emergency button around her neck at all times.
The best way to describe "Hector's Team is a narrative of my family's experience starting when my Mom, Sarah Garth, needed around the clock care again in mid-December 2014.
Mom fell again in mid-November and was at Rivercrest until after Thanksgiving. This time she did not break anything. A week after I took her home from Rivercrest she went to her doctor for a regular checkup. He did some bloodwork and called me the next day because Mom was severely dehydrated. Mom told her doctor she was ready to go and did not want to leave her apartment so we asked Ellen for wellness visits every two hours and called hospice (Caring Dimensions). The hospice nurse came at 1:30 PM to evaluate Mom. By the time she left four hours later, she put in place a hospital bed, protocols, to reposition Mom every two hours and other actions to make Mom more comfortable. All Mom wanted was comfort care. (We also learned about Pedialite Popsicles, which is the best antidote to the discomfort of a dry mouth due to dehydration). We called Hector about 3:30 PM realizing Mom needed someone with her 24/7. Hector was able to put someone in place by 8 PM and set up an around the clock schedule to care for Mom. I met all but one of the six women who worked for Hector and got to know three of them on my almost daily visits with Mom. The caregivers I got to know became fond of my Mom, who gave respect and appreciation to everyone with whom she came in contact.
Under the care of hospice and Hector's caregivers Mom became so comfortable she decided to stick around for a few more weeks. These weeks gave Mom time to visit with almost every member of her family, including children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces and a nephew. Mom went from not wanting to move from her bed, except to the bathroom, and not wanting any visitors; to a last visit to have her hair done and meaningful conversations with her family members and one or two friends. I would watch her caregivers as they took steps to make her more comfortable (including mouth care to keep it moist, and lotion on her dry skin after a sponge bath, etc.) and say, why didn't I think of that myself.
It was comforting and reassuring to me to know that Hector was in the building, coordinating and communicating with each caregiver so that as hospice changed Mom's protocols and medications everyone knew the orders and did not drop the ball. With hindsight the only thing I would change would be to get Hector's team and hospice involved sooner than we did.
Mom and I both wanted her to be at home (her Newbury Court apartment) at the end of her life, if it was possible. Hospice (Caring Dimensions) and Hector and his team made it possible.
