I moved to Houston in January of 2015 to help my niece with child care when she found out that her firstborn has Down Syndrome. I cared for him extensively the first year or so that I was here. I provided significant child care assistance to her family, especially after the birth of her second child. Eventually the family did not need me as often, with both boys in school and a stay-at-home dad. However, I still helped out frequently, especially when the boys were on breaks from school. I love babies and little children; I feel most comfortable caring for babies. I was a school librarian for 22 years and have two children of my own. I would love to help out another family -- I know what a life-saver child care help is for parents. I can work full or part-time, and often on short notice. I take great pride in my work -- no TV; the cell phone is used only for music to sing to or dance with the child or to speak with the parents.
Ruth worked with our family from May 2023-February 2024, caring for our children who were 6 months old and 3 years old at the start. Our time together was wonderful, and only came to an end because she needed to move out of state. We feel so lucky to have had Ruth in our lives and would recommend her wholeheartedly to other families. Ruth is kind, responsible, and great with kids. We especially appreciated that she was actively engaged with both our kids — always talking or singing, getting down on the floor to play games, reading endless stories, and discovering fun new songs (then patiently listening to “Chugga Chugga Choo Choo” on repeat a million times). Both kids loved spending time with her. We could tell that she genuinely cared for our children and felt very comfortable leaving them under her watch. Ruth’s wealth of experience made her a great resource. She often had thoughtful insights to share, books to recommend, and even brought in special baby-friendly utensils and bowls as we were introducing our daughter to solids. Ruth is flexible and was very easy to work with, particularly with our variable scheduling needs and being willing to work longer hours when my son was home sick from preschool. In addition to childcare assistance, Ruth also helped around the house as needed (meal prep, folding laundry, loading/unloading the dishwasher, etc.). She communicates effectively and promptly addresses any requests or feedback. She has a warm sense of humor and is a pleasure to be around. During our time together, Ruth became a member of our family and we miss her dearly. Not only is she an experienced and professional caregiver, she’s also an all-around lovely person and infused our home with joy and positivity. We wish Ruth all the best and know any family would be fortunate to work with her.
