Experience: 10 yrs
Recently, a gentleman whose care I managed for the last four years passed. I tried to be more than a caregiver, and more than a companion. He was my buddy. He was 99 years old. A marine who fought and was wounded in the battle for Iwo Jima. You may have seen us at Tip Top or Cracker barrel. I will miss our country rides throughout the area, and down to his farm. He represented the greatest generation well, and I miss him. About 15 years ago I took an early retirement from the automotive coatings division of DuPont and sort of accidentally became a caregiver. I saw a Godly need, especially in memory care, and I have been blessed and worked with some wonderful families. I have a Masters in Theology and Servant Leadership from Gonzaga, and I've taken 30+ courses through Care Academy that covered everything from cultural competency, HIPAA, skin care and wound prevention, and elderly abuse prevention.
Rick is really building a bond with my father in a time when he really needs it. My father has been diagnosed with a rare neurological disease called Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. The prognosis is not good as one loses their mobility and cognition over time. As well as their ability to speak and swallow. Rick has been a thoughtful and attentive friend to Kevin, seeking out things he enjoys and can still do in a thoughtful way. Long country drives, going to breakfast at the local cafe and showing him the local sites. I’m very grateful for the bond they are building in what is otherwise a lonely and challenging time for my father. He is new in town having moved to Cville to be closer to family. Rick has helped us with the numerous medical and dental appointments, and is helping to keep my dad independent by driving for errands. He is thoughtful and engages my dad outside of his working hours with texts, calls and even the occasional bowl of homemade chili delivered on a cold day. This has been wonderful and I look forward to working with Rick for years to come.
