My paid experience is minimal. I did volunteer work in retirement homes when I was a teen. I've worked for a couple of families where I was responsible for driving their loved one to appointments and errands. I would also keep an eye on their living conditions and keep family members updated. Most of my experience came unexpectedly with my father, who had dementia. I cared for him the last three years of his life. During that time, I witnessed the abuse and neglect that takes place in assisted living facilities. If you have a family member in a facility, make sure you have someone who can check in with them as much as possible.
