I worked with Autistic kids/adults for 8 years in the Bay Area, took 3 years of ASL (sign 3), worked at a socialization program, and volunteered at a deaf school. The private school offered 1:1 teaching where we worked closely with behavioral and speech therapist for consistency for each student. We were able to teach new tools to students, parents and/or caregivers to help improve their daily lives, including ASL. Our afterschool socialization program for some students allowed them to participate in social events, and eventually even going off to college or getting jobs - living a semi-independent lives. :) I personally was hired for respite for several students for after school hours, overnights, and weekends by trusted parents to help with their kids.
