I am the second of five children. I am 45 years old of Colombian descent and I speak only Spanish but understand English very well when it is spoken to me, though I speak it in fragments. I have been married for 24 years and have lived at the same address for the last 16 years in the home with my husband and I own. Growing up, I helped to take care of my handicapped older sister as well as my younger brother since he was a small child. Now that I am married, I too am raising five children myself. They are ranging in ages from 11 to 29 years old. The two oldest, I took in after their mother passed away. Now I am very much involved with the youngest ones. The 13-year-old boy is in middle school, the 18-year-old girl is in the Marines and the 22-year-old daughter is in college. I feel that having experienced and dealing first hand with the difficulties of Autism/handicapped sister prepared me in dealing with children.
