I have assisted in special needs classrooms since I was in fifth grade. From 18-21 years of age I worked as a one-on-one special needs care provider for a boy (10-13 yrs old) with Autism. The summer of 2010 I had the privilege of working with Community Based Activity Program (CBAP) with a class of the children experiencing the highest behavioral and mental needs. Working both one-on-one and with CBAP has given me the skills in how to continue educational (I. E. P.) goals, physical/motor skills, and social skills that the children are working on, especially for kids with Autism. I thoroughly enjoy the challenges these jobs provide. Children with special needs are often left behind because people choose not to take the extra time to find each child's strengths. For me, this is one of my favorites parts of the job. Finding what makes each child unique and strong is wonderful. I have worked with children of all age levels and a wide range in severity of the special needs they are experiencing. I enjoy the work and most often don't view it as such. It is a joy working in this field.
