About Kathleen

Hello! I am in my 7th year of teaching. I am currently a Kindergarten-2nd Grade Intervention teacher, working with struggling students in reading and math in small groups. Before I came into my current position, I taught 1st grade for 3 years and 2nd grade for two years. I have taught classes with students of many different needs, including Multilingual Learners and students with IEPs. I am finishing up my first year of a Master's degree in Literacy Education from Hunter College. In addition to this education, I have completed Orton-Gillingham training and I have experience using the SPIRE curriculum, both of which are explicit, systematic phonics programs. I use hands-on ways to practice reading and writing--my lessons often include tapping words out with pop-it's, writing letters in sand, sorting magnetic letters retrieved from sensory bins, and engaging games. I love finding the way that makes reading and writing click for a child!
