I worked as a camp counselor at a camp specifically designed for campers with moderate to severe mental or physical disabilities for three years. Counselors are assigned to a camper on a one to one ratio. We begin our day at seven in the morning, waking up our campers, getting them dressed, teeth brushed, and other morning activities. Except for a one hour break, we work until 10 in the evening, making sure our campers were showered, had their medicine, and other night activities. So far, I have worked with a variety of people with disabilities, including autism (high functioning and low functioning), mental disabilities, and a variety of physical disabilities. I have been trained in feeding, changing briefs, bathing, two person lifts from and to wheelchairs, and basic caregiving. I have also received training in behavioral management, and the use of ventilators and gastric tubes. I've also babysat three children ages 3, 5, and 10 together
