I am a retired elementary education teacher. I have been working as a nanny for a wonderful family for the past two years. I have compassion and love helping others. I am a 52-year-old woman, and I cared for my mother for years before she passed. During that time I found that Mentally challenging games like crossword puzzles and chess are one way to stimulate cognitive thought. I also encourage conversation about world events, offering discussion about their life history and asking for advice for managing current problems. The more you involve an elderly person to remain in their day to day lives and decisions, the more needed they feel. I found that as in teaching, establishing a routine for daily activities, such as meal times, bathing and bed time is important. Planning ahead for appointments or schedules for the following week will allow you both to plan out and establish a schedule. Encouraging seniors to develop new hobbies or activities can make life more meaningful. But it all boils down to the kindness of the caregiver.
