For 19 years, I trained and supervised several retired senior volunteers. They performed simple tasks and enjoyed giving back. Work gave them purpose, and I was able to adapt the training and work to fit each individual learning style. I spent time with aging grandparents, one with Alzheimer's, the other the caregiver. I cleaned house for them a few times and watched the heartbreaking struggle to hang on. My parents, both 90 and dealing with Parkinsons and dementia, require my assistance now and then. I prepare and deliver frozen meals, assist with technology, finances, and coordinate maintenance tasks when they are not able to. Caregiving is not for the weak. It requires patience, creativity, engagement, and humor. Above all, they need to feel safe. If you are a full-time caregiver and need respite care, please reach out.
