Hello! My experience includes teaching students in an inclusion or resource classes setting at High School. Was a House Manager in a group home or a DSP, Direct Support Professional for 17 years. My view is to be a supportive coach, assisting the person but not taking over and doing things they can do. In our group home, the adults did morning routines of getting dressed, eating, taking meds and vitamins, oral hygiene, cleaning bathrooms and rooms, doing laundry and going to an outside place to eat. Ensured showering, teeth brushing and evening routines followed. If residents needed assistance in tasks, I’d encourage and help them. Did this on weekends. Have always had an inner advocate type of heart and see the ones I help as part of my group or family. Loved working with special needs kids and adults but didn’t like unnecessary paperwork.
