I did not plan on entering this field when I chose to follow Psychology. I worked as a nanny when I was younger, and being a caregiver for children just wasn't for me, so I aspired to be a therapist.
I got my first job as a caregiver for developmentally disabled adults last year. It has changed my life. This job introduced me to a whole knew world of wonderful people.
I worked mostly 12-36 hour shifts, and I would take care of cooking, cleaning, washing them, dressing them, medications, and transportation to and from classes/appointments.
In the spare time we had I would take them to the parks, lakes, and downtown festivities, and I loved every minute of it.
I decided that I wanted to pursue nursing so that I could help people physically as well as mentally. I am so excited about this choice to further my education, but that is far in the future.
Right now, I am looking for a job as a caregiver where I can further my experience in this field and see where it leads me.
