About the job

About who needs care: Mom has mild Alzheimers and is living independently in her condo. Her husband of 9 years lives in his home separately, about 10 minutes away, and visits daily from 4PM-7:30/8PM to cook dinner together and watch TV and prep Moms medicine and get her mail. Mom needs verbal and visual prompting at this point to awaken, take her AM meds, make her bed (or wash the sheets weekly), take her shower/wash her hair, get dressed, do her PT exercises, and do any responsibilities around her condo. Mom needs a verbal prompt to dress appropriately for the season/weather and then she can match her own outfit to the occasion and weather usually with minimal support. Mom can shower and dress herself and just needs more time to do so. Mom keeps a cane nearby since she feels off balance at times with her Alzheimers. She shares daily that her lower back hurts and, left on her own, will spend her days on her couch watching tv and napping and eating. Mom loves to crochet and will do so daily when reminded. Her sense of time seems gone so she needs encouragement to do things in the moment and is easily redirected when she tells me no, she will do something later. Later never comes for her and, when left on her own, she doesnt clean her sleep apnea machine, doesnt clean her condo, wears the same dirty pajamas and clothes for days, and her house and her body smells. She has lost her sense of smell. She shared this with me and I witnessed her smell a rancid dish rag and hold it right up to her nose and tell me she couldnt smell anything. With me, Mom goes on daily walks. I link arms with her on one side and she has her cane on the other. She also does stairs with me. She is often sweating and we sit on benches to take breaks but we walk and she always walks back a little less hunched over and a bit smoother. Im looking for an aide to take my place as I live in Erie, PA (8 hours away) and need to get back to be with my husband and child. I dont want to leave until I have support in place for my mom. Example schedule: AM-good morning! Prompt to brush teeth; help make bed; ready breakfast together; prompt to take morning meds; After breakfast-prompt to do stretches/PT; prompt for one household chore per weekly schedule (mop, vacuum, laundry, sheets, bathrooms, dust); prompt to shower/dress accordingly to season and weather Take daily walk OR use clubhouse pool (OR put Mom on van (TRANSVET) to Norristown Senior Center); prompt/support lunch and for Mom to sweep her kitchen floor/change her dishrags daily and start Mom with her crochet before leaving. Her husband will arrive around 4 until 7:30/8PM to cook dinner and watch tv with her and confirm evening medication. About the care needs: Someone calm, quieter, consistent, and organized that Mom will feel safe to be with and that she will trust to take care of her. She is worried about a stranger being with her. Mom has had depression all her life and isnt a very social person. She always looks for one good friend/companion to talk with and laugh with. Mom will be happy to sit and crochet and watch tv and talk and drink tea with someone after they help her take care of herself and her environment. Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, and light housekeeping.
