About who needs care: Has PSP, a Parkinson's like disease that affects mobility. Does use a walker and has a wheel chair. Prone to falls as there is a delay between thinking through things and body reactions - currently trying to learn new life habits to focus on safety. Communication is slow as he has to have time for words to get from his brain to his mouth, but he is fully aware and able to make decisions. He likes to sing and watch Fox News and occasionally watch Golf or Football. He has a routine set. He gets up between 6:30 and 7. May need help getting dressed (we are working on independence skills). Makes his coffee, if weather is nice, goes outside to drink his coffee, smoke a cigarette, and calls a friend. Needs help reentering the house (slight support or verbal reminder to move legs/arms). If cold outside, he may briefly stand outside the door or sit in doorway to smoke (he is NOT to smoke IN the house). He eats lunch around noon and takes midday meds about 1 p.m. He eats dinner around 4:30/5. Evening meds around 7 p.m. and goes to bed. May need help getting undressed for bed (we are working on skills here & using the wheel chair for stability). In between his routine meals, he watches TV. He used to go for short walks (up one or 2 houses), but this will depend on his daily mobility. With recent falls he has injured his right side and his right leg gets tired quickly and drags. However, he has a transport chair, so he could be taken for walks outside if he would like and cannot walk far with walker. About the care needs: Someone with patience that can wait for a response when a question is asked. Someone that won't get offended if he's aggravated or annoyed at your presence. Someone that can give verbal cues and suggestions for movements and habits that are safety driven, and be comfortable correcting actions as they are being taken to reinforce safety (ie. please sit to put on your shirt. Standing while dressing makes you unstable and you can fall). Someone that can help a 170lb 6ft tall man stand, or on the chance that he falls can help him up (I am 5'1" and I can assist him in standing). Someone that is not squeamish at the sight of blood. He is on blood thinners and often bleeds if he nicks his hand on a door frame or if he falls. Needs to be able to clean scrapes and apply bandaids. Services needed include: meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, companionship, feeding, bathing / dressing, and mobility assistance.
