About who needs care: 79 yr old strong man suddenly afflicted & permananrntly disabled with GBS after a routine flu shot 2020. Not covid! After 1 yr of acute/ sub- acute rehab facility & 5 yrs of on again, off again therapy, he has plateaued with no further progression. Still needs assistance bathing, cannot walk, stand or get in / out of bed without walker= wheelchair, also incontinence issues. Has taken a physical and an emotional toll on the family, especially his spouse ( also 79), who has aged approximately 20 yrs sine his arrival back home on 2021 . After recent fall last week from weakness in legs and trip in ambulance.. we are overwhelmed, upset and exhausted. There are borderline dementia issues arising with intermittent belligerence and animosity as well. Thank you in advance for any suggestions. About the care needs: Ideal caregiver must be think- skinned, strong and willing to swap wits, while also being compassionate to a man who has been thrown into turmoil and can noonger fo tge things he loved in retirement. Was a c ateer boilermaker/ welder, had done logging, firewood, remodeled several homes, hunted, fished and made maple syrup his whole life. Ideal caregiver needs to understand that type of life a " manly man" has lead. Although his strength and stubbornness have gotten him through part of his disability, it is also debilitating snd frustrating to suddenly become dependent and embarrassed about daily routines we all take for granted. Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, feeding, bathing / dressing, and mobility assistance.
