About who needs care: Mom has dementia. I believe it is vascular; she only sees a GP at this point. The rest of her health is excellent although she is increasingly wobbly and without stamina since it is difficult to get her to exercise. She recently moved to us from her home of 55 years (with my brother). She is in good spirits, loves watching birds at the feeders, doing jigsaw (100-300 piece), word search, "music appreciation" (music, feet up, eyes closed), watching MLB esp the Padres. She is welcoming and friendly to all the people who have been in the house. Of course she repeats her stories and songs, and I know that she is mixing up facts. She has trouble remembering that she is living here, but when she asks and we tell her, she nods--her affect is not troubled. A caregiver would need to be engaged with her (puzzle loving helps), to chat, to sit, to watch, to puzzle together. The caregiver would need to prepare simple and small meals (a sandwich, fruit and some cut up veg if lunch, or reheat left overs)--she often eats them from a tray during the afternoon. Mom dresses by herself, uses the toilet by herself although she doesn't always wipe clean, and can shower using our shower chair and handicap equipped shower. But she is unfamiliar with the handle (so I turned it on) and I anticipate that she will be resistant with me about taking showers (we try for every 2nd or 3rd day). We would like someone who can help with that when necessary. About the care needs: Friendly, upbeat, engaged. There will be times when you can be on your phone (she'll be doing "music appreciation" or taking a nap in her chair, or doing word seach) but we would expect you to talk with her, listen, and be a companion. She thrives with people around. Again, we anticipate difficulty with showers... Services needed include: companionship, feeding, and bathing / dressing.
