About who needs care: My mother is a PHD sociologist who had a specialty in Aging research. Her mind is near 100%. Her short term memory is getting mildly weaker. She walks slowly but well with a walker and cane. She takes care of her ADL's but needs help getting in and out of the shower. She has urinary incontinence and takes care of it herself with pads and Depends. Daily requirements would be to empty bathroom trash bin, plate her lunch and dinner and prep juice and cereal for breakfast (she can make her own coffee and pour her milk). She is gentle and kind and healthy, does PT 2 times per week and eats a nutritious diet. Currently we are ordering meals in that can be microwaved but we would want fresh salads prepared. MOST important is that Mom, as an academic, wants to be left alone to think, write, read, nap, etc. She wants to get things done so she can spend time with friends or family talking on the phone or on outings. She is a life long environmentalist and loves nature. I, her daughter, live upstairs. Alice is in the "patio apartment" which we remodeled last year for aging in place. It looks onto an urban garden and is a comfortable pleasant space. We live in Dupont Circle with excellent metro access. Parking is difficult. About the care needs: My mother would appreciate someone who is mentally engaged and positive, who is not bored and on their phone all day long. Someone who is energetic and would enjoy a daily walk. Someone smart, healthy and a life-lover would be great! Someone with a liberal (blue leaning) outlook as she is a self-ascribed political junkie. She's a little hard of hearing so thick foreign accents are hard for her to understand. To reiterate, she doesn't like being doted on and enjoys her alone time but realizes she has lost some physical autonomy. Services needed include: transportation, meal preparation, errands / shopping, light housekeeping, and companionship.
