Gr 3-4 Session 5: Measurement Mavens and Data Dynamos
by The Math Workshop
Cary, NC
Get ready to measure up and dive into data in this exciting Math Workshop Session! We’ll learn to collect, organize, and interpret information, and use our measurement skills to explore the world around us. We’ll apply our understanding of measurement to solve problems involving distance, time, liquid volumes, mass, and money. We’ll explore different units of measurement within the same system. We’ll learn to tell time to the nearest minute and solve problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals. We’ll measure lengths using rulers and explore different units of measurement. We’ll work with liquid volumes and masses, learning to estimate and measure them. We’ll create and interpret scaled bar graphs to represent data. We’ll learn to represent and interpret data using line plots. Come join us and have fun!

Gr 5-6 Session 1: Rational Numbers
by The Math Workshop
Cary, NC
Get ready to explore the exciting world of rational numbers! This engaging and interactive Math Workshop Session is designed for fifth and sixth graders to build a strong foundation in understanding fractions, decimals, and how they relate to each other. Through hands-on activities, collaborative problem-solving, and real-world connections, we’ll move beyond memorization and truly grasp the meaning and power of these essential numbers. What We’ll Explore: Fraction Frenzy: We’ll start by revisiting and deepening our understanding of fractions. Using visual models like fraction bars, circles, and number lines, we’ll explore equivalent fractions, comparing and ordering fractions, and understanding fractions greater than one. Get ready to manipulate and visualize fractions in a whole new way! Decimal Discoveries: Journey into the land of decimals! We’ll connect decimals to our base-ten system and see how they represent parts of a whole. Through engaging activities, we’ll learn to read, write, compare, and order decimals with confidence. We’ll also explore the relationship between decimals and fractions. The Fraction-Decimal Connection: Uncover the fascinating link between fractions and decimals! We’ll discover how to convert fractions to decimals and vice versa, understanding when one representation might be more useful than the other. Get ready to see these two types of numbers as different sides of the same coin! Real-World Rational Numbers: Where do we see rational numbers in our everyday lives? From measuring ingredients in a recipe to understanding discounts at the store, we’ll explore practical applications of fractions and decimals. You’ll start to see rational numbers everywhere! Problem-Solving Power: Put your newfound knowledge to the test with challenging and fun problem-solving activities. Working individually and collaboratively, you’ll apply your understanding of rational numbers to solve real-world scenarios and develop your critical thinking skills.

Gr 5-6 Session 2: Geometry Geniuses
by The Math Workshop
Cary, NC
Get ready to unfold the world of shapes! This dynamic Geometry Math Workshop Session is designed for 5th and 6th graders to go beyond identifying shapes and dive into the fascinating properties and relationships within geometry. Through engaging activities, creative constructions, and real-world applications, we’ll transform into true geometry explorers! Get ready to embark on a geometry adventure where you’ll explore, create, and discover the beauty and power of shapes! What We’ll Explore: Shape Detectives: We’ll begin by sharpening our shape-detecting skills! We’ll classify polygons based on their attributes (sides, vertices, edges, angles), explore the relationships between different quadrilaterals, and even create our own shape classification systems. Get ready to think like a mathematician and justify your reasoning! Angle Adventures: Prepare to become angle experts! We’ll learn to measure angles with precision, explore different types of angles (acute, obtuse, right, straight), and discover the relationships between angles, such as complementary and supplementary angles. We’ll even use our angle knowledge to solve puzzles and create geometric art. 3D Shape Construction: Let’s build beyond the flat surface! We’ll investigate three-dimensional shapes, identify their faces, edges, and vertices, and learn about nets. We’ll use hands-on materials to construct our own 3D models using toothpicks and clay and explore concepts like surface area and volume in an intuitive way. Geometry in the Real World: Geometry isn’t just confined to the classroom! We’ll discover how geometry is used in architecture, design, art, and even nature. From identifying shapes in buildings to understanding the geometry of a spiderweb, we’ll see how geometry plays a vital role in the world around us. Coordinate Plane Creations: We will learn how to use the coordinate plane. We’ll learn how points are located and how to plot them. We will use these skills to create geometric shapes and designs.
