by Studio on the Common
Winchester, MA
Have you ever dreamed of building your own house, school, or even a fire station? Do you love animals? In this hands-on week, you’ll bring your ideas to life using cardboard and imagination to create BOTH! Throughout the week, you’ll explore the design process—from planning and problem-solving to building and improving your structure. You’ll design and construct a cardboard building inspired by a real-life place of your choice, adding recognizable details like doors, windows, roofs, and textures. You’ll experiment with depth, structure, and craftsmanship to make your building sturdy, detailed, and unique. After you paint and finish your building, you will work together with others to place it in a purpose-built Studio on the Common neighborhood, seeing how your creation fits into a shared community. But that’s not all! You will also work on creating your own animal using all the same skills. This class is perfect if you love building, creating, and imagining the world around you—no prior experience needed, just curiosity and creativity!

Everyone will help plan the city and build their own part, using cardboard, blocks, and art materials. You’ll also make simple puppets—people, animals, or silly characters—who live in the city. Your puppets will have jobs, homes, and stories to tell! Once the city is built, it’s time to play and pretend. You’ll use your puppets to act out stories like helping a neighbor, visiting the park, or going to the pizza shop. There’s no script—just imagination and teamwork. At the end of the week, you’ll share your city and perform a short puppet show for families, then take home your puppets and your own buildings.
