The Needles were named for the colorful spires of Cedar Mesa Sandstone that dominate the area. The Needles is a remote district located within the southern portion of Canyonlands National Park in southeastern Utah. The Needles District is 1.5 hours from Moab, Utah. Needles is a rugged wilderness of buttes and mesas that sprawls outward in a tapestry of oranges and reds. The Fisher Towers section of the Colorado River is HEAVY ON SCENERY, WITH SOME FUN SMALL RAPIDS, depending on the water level and time of year. This is an area where many motion pictures and commercials have been filmed over the years. John Wayne and John Ford filmed a lot of old westerns in this area. Recently filmed in this area was The Lone Ranger with Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer in 2013. More recently, HBO's Westworld, season 1, which premiered in 2016.

This paddling trip offers a quick teaser of the scenic beauty and easy rapids of Castle Valley! Our half-day trips give you about 2 hours on the water to take in the incredible beauty of this sandstone paradise. Meet at the Mild to Wild office to check in and get ready for the river! Your guides will get you fitted for a PFD (aka life jacket) and then hop on the shuttle for a scenic 40 minute drive out to Castle Valley. Once there, we’ll have a safety orientation and some paddling instruction before you push off with the fleet for the next couple hours. Kayaking trips float with the rafting trips, and the guides will give you instruction as you paddle along. The kayaks move much faster than the rafts, so on occasion you may have to wait up for them. More time to take in the scenery, we say! This is a very mild rafting trip, with mostly calm flat water with a couple rapid sections sprinkled in along the way.

Our specially designed, open-air vehicles let passengers get a taste for four-wheeling on the red-rocks. Those looking to teeter the tires and surge with adrenaline cliffside need not apply for this tour! What is extreme are the viewpoints, not the ride itself.
