P&G: The Backup Care Advantage

The Challenge

P&G’s iconic Gillette brand knows that offering employees comprehensive benefits makes their lives easier. Benefits like backup care — a lifesaver for when an employee has to relocate or when regular care falls through. But, Gillette shared that their previous backup care provider wasn’t working out. Employees weren’t using the service. It wasn’t meeting the diverse caregiving needs of the workforce. Low utilization was costing the company time and money — both directly and indirectly, as a result of absenteeism and decreased productivity. Employees said they valued backup care, but they needed more flexibility in finding and arranging it for their families.

Our Solution

P&G’s Gillette turned to Care For Business by Care.com. We tailored a program that makes sense both for the business and its diverse workforce. For example, employees now have access to finding backup care for adults as well as children. All 1,300 employees receive 20 company—subsidized days of backup care per year. The choice between in-home or in-center care is entirely up to them.

The Results

Care For Business solution has been a successful addition to Gillette’s employee benefits program. Since partnering with Care For Business, utilization of the backup care benefit is up. Leadership has ongoing insight into usage rates thanks to an intuitive analytics dashboard. Employees say it’s easy to book backup care right from the mobile app, whenever and wherever they need it. P&G has been so happy with the new program that they recently introduced adult backup care. Employees can now get extra help for themselves, a spouse, or an aging loved one if they have surgery or an ongoing care need. P&G’s new program has made employees happier and more productive, and it’s helping the company attract and retain the best people.
