My son is finishing kindergarten and preparing for first grade. His current teacher says he needs to work on the following areas over the summer so he won't start first grade behind:
1. Knowing the following sounds: ch, sh, ck,
2) Knowing long vowel sounds
3) Correction of lower-case b and d mix-up
4) Blending words to read fluently, especially with ch, ck and sh blends
5) Math transposing, saying 30, but writing 13 or saying 45, but writing 54. O tends to write the first number he says, such as the 5 in 54, and then when he writes the next number, he writes it in front of the one he wrote, not behind it.
6) Proper letter writing and formation. Writing the letters, the right way, for example, top to bottom, not taking pencil up to reposition, etc
7) Writing 5 full sentences with proper punctuation and uppercase letters
