About Thomas

Experience: 10 yrs

COVID-19 vaccinated

I was the primary caregiver for my father-in-law for nearly 7 years while he resided in our home. My caring included all the activities of daily living, and transporting him to dialysis. My wife and I were also raising four children at the same time. In 2009, I became certified by the New York State Department of Health as a home health aide. I began working for Recco Home Care, Interim Healthcare, and for the last 12 years, the Visiting Nurse Service and Hospice of Suffolk County. Reliably and consistently, I assisted homebound patients with toileting, bathing, dressing, grooming, feeding, exercising, companionship, shopping, food preparation, and laundry. For 15 years, I volunteered as a companion at the Northport Veterans Administration Nursing Home. Thank you

My family has had the great fortune of knowing Tom since 2015, when my then 88 year old father required the assistance of a home health-care Aide. Tom came to Dad’s house three times a week to provide assistance with bathing, grooming, and dressing. He ensured that Dad used his cane or walker safely and helped him to transfer in and out of chairs. Tom laid out Dad’s clothes, oversaw his laundry, made up his bed, and helped Dad with carrying and organizing his things. From the very beginning, though, it was Tom’s attention to detail that set him apart from any other Aide we had ever known. It always amazed me just how well he knew my father. Tom was able to detect changes in my Dad’s condition, often before anyone else noticed. He was vigilant about examining Dad for pressure sores, showed us how to reduce friction and chafing from clothes and shoes, and recommended and applied the creams and products that soothed Dad’s skin and kept it healthy. I’ll never forget the day that Tom diagnosed Dad’s Shingles based on the tiniest little blip on his back; the very same day that the doctor had missed it. It’s this kind of attention to detail and training that truly distinguishes Tom. As the years progressed and my father’s health continued to decline, Tom’s assistance increased. He helped Dad get out of bed in the morning and got him ready for bed at night. He assisted Dad with his Physical Therapy exercises, and when Dad could no longer ambulate with just a cane or walker, Tom assisted with wheelchair transfers. Tom aided my father with bathing and toileting. He also assisted with meal preparation, and when my Dad’s swallowing ability deteriorated, Tom physically fed him his food and cued him to swallow. When Tom was with my Dad, we knew that he was receiving the very best of care. In addition to his considerable caregiving skills, though, it is Tom’s character that makes him such a truly extraordinary Aide. From January 2015 through Dad’s passing in January 2024, Tom was not just my Dad’s Aide; he was his closest friend. He was, in fact, like family. He provided companionship and emotional support to not just my father, but my mother, while she was alive, and to us children as Dad’s condition deteriorated. His never-ending supply of compassion, empathy, patience, and encouragement were like a healing salve on even the most stressful of days. I cannot tell you the great comfort my father and family took in his presence. He was truly our Guardian Angel. Tom is reliable, dependable, always showed up, trustworthy and so much more! Tom helped Dad to live with dignity and respect in the home he loved for as long as possible and I whole-heartedly recommend Tom to any family seeking an Aide to assist with the care of a loved one. He is truly one of the most caring, skilled, conscientious, and honorable human beings I have ever met.
