After a full career of starting and running my national technology consulting company I reduced my work load to care for my parents. I did this care with the help of care givers but I found that the available personnel were generally quite young and my parents reacted much better to people closer to their age. They were able to communicate and relate with these care givers and they were much happier. After their deaths, I worked at several retirement homes as a companion to residents, particularly those experiencing dementia. I was able to establish long-term relationships with 3 residents that I maintain via telephoneI to date. I found they related to my experiences and were more communicative with me than younger volunteers. We also found their decline was less marked with the consistent interaction. I moved to NY 2 years ago and miss this direct interaction. I believe I could make any senior needing companionship and assistance have a pleasant and positive experience.
