I changed careers at 47 cause I wanted to make a difference in someone's life. I worked for 1 1/2 years as a certified nursing assistant in a skilled nursing facility helping our elderly with all aspects of their activities of daily living. I also worked as a mental health therapy aide at the Buffalo psychiatric center for 10 years helping patients that had a bipolar diagnosis to dementia. I took care of my mom the last year of her life. Since being a caregiver with Care. com I've been blessed to have had the opportunity to help 5 people in need. I've helped a gentleman who had Parkinson's disease to an elderly person who was 90 years young. My duties included, medication administration, toileting, bed bathing, feeding, cooking, cleaning, exercising, getting ready for the day, getting ready for bed, take to appointments and most importantly companionship. We hired Rick to care for my father who suffered from Parkinson's and brain cancer. Words cannot express how grateful we are to have found him. After the first night caring for my dad, my dad said 'now I have two brother's named Rick.' My dad's needs were extensive, and Rick handled each one with thorough care. We trusted him completely and he became part of our family. Rick is detailed, caring, capable, comforting to be around, and an overall inspiration. From the hoyer to more than one type of catheter, feeding issues with thickeners, patience required due to a brain injury, bowel issues at the end, and more, Rick was a rock. He never complained and my dad loved being around him. I would also trust him totally to care for a woman. He had my dad smiling when he shared a story of how he cared for an elderly woman who only spoke Polish and he didn't speak polish. He said that they talked all night and had a great time. My dad passed yesterday and Rick was a huge part of our journey
