My most memorable grade school accomplishments include: 4 years of Latin, 100% accuracy on the GA Social Studies graduation exam, editor in chief of high school literary magazine. Basically, I'm really good at rote memorization and publishing people's stories! These skills can be difficult to attain though, and it helps tremendously to have nonjudgemental encouragement. There is often a psychological factor at play that may be keeping your learner from performing at their ideal aptitude. I'd love to take time to get to know them and understand all of what's going on inside their head and heart. From there, we can help each other make sense of the world around them. That might mean cultivating a creative outlet to juxtapose the more "logical" learning in traditional school settings. Kids deserve the freedom and autonomy to pursue their passions. If we can discover what gets them going, then perhaps we can steer some of that energy towards academic advancement as well.
