Empowering elementary students to reach their full potential is the core of my teaching practice. I have a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and I worked as a teacher for 4 years. My favorite part of teaching was helping little ones learn to read. When kids are learning to read, we have to remember that we have to go slow to go fast. Pre-literacy skills cannot be skipped, and it doesn't matter how old your student is. We can and regularly do return to phonemic awareness lessons with older students, and we observe that the second it clicks, the student takes off reading at grade level. I've seen second graders go from reading 15 words per minute to 130+ words per minute in two weeks flat with targeted support. The same approach works for math. I like to remind older students that if you somehow along the way convinced yourself that 2+3=6, that misconception will follow you all the way to algebra. Always go slow to go fast in one-on-one tutoring!
