It has been a common pattern for my family to work with individuals with disabilities. My mom, dad, grandma, and older sister all work with these individuals. I have not veered from that pattern. I have had a job with NWSRA (Northwest Special Recreation Association) for three years. I am currently 18 years old and a senior in high school. In this job I work one on one or with a group of individuals that have a disability/disabilities. I have learned compassion, patience, and problem solving skills. As well as communication skills, such as finding alternative ways to communicate as opposed to verbally speaking. I have learned basic sign language in this job, as some of my participants understand this better. I am also first aid and CPR certified. I believe this job is incredibly rewarding. I will never not look forward to going to work if it means being able to hang out with these lovely individuals.
