I have cared for my younger cousin with Cerebral Palsy since I was about 12 years old. He is unable to walk or speak, and my job duties included bathing, taking to the bathroom, feeding and generally entertaining him. I feel so passionate about these kiddos that I'm getting my degree in helping them! Ill graduate with my bachelors in Communication Sciences and Disorders (Special needs speech therapy) next year and then will go on for a masters. My younger brother is also on the autism spectrum, and I am so thankful to have been exposed to special needs children because they are so unique and have so much to contribute. I am working to become a DDA certified caregiver and should complete my training in the next couple months, but I feel I have had so much hands on experience that I am well equipped to take care of special needs children.
