I was a companion/caregiver for a 93-year-old mid-stage dementia patient for almost two years. I drove her to Dr.'s appts., social activities and took her food shopping. I also cooked for her, oversaw her general health, daily exercise, physical therapy exercises, hydration, any assigned meds and changed minor wound dressings when necessary. In addition, I coordinated services for her home, (housecleaning, landscaping, plumber, etc.). I also assisted with banking transactions and some bill paying. We participated in activities that would stimulate her cognitively and help to improve her memory - crossword puzzles, scrabble, listening to classical music, watching films/videos, letter writing and engaged in general conversation and storytelling on a daily basis. We also created a garden together, read and did genealogy research for her family. I already had a deep respect for the elderly and their life experiences as I was very close with my grandparents. I was the primary caretaker for both of my grandmothers. The woman I worked for became a 3rd grandmother to me. It became my mission to keep her active, independent, enjoying every day while experiencing "quality of life".
