Experience: 5 yrs
I started baby-sitting at 13, as well as helping to take care of younger siblings at home. I worked in church day care and multiple vacation bible schools. I was also a summer art camp counselor for the local cultural center. As soon as I was old enough to drive I became a part-time nanny for a family with 5 rambunctious boys, ages 10 months to 12 years. I then worked as an assistant for a specialty children's photographer, working in over 50 day cares. When the season ended I was blessed to nanny again, this time full-time, 40+hrs, with a family of four. I had full-time responsibilities for a special needs 3-year-old as well as after-school care for his 8-year-old brother. I did light housecleaning as well as administering breathing treatments and monitoring nutritional and medical needs. When mom decided to stay home, I was sad to leave but was excited to find another special family. I then worked as a daddy's helper full time for a work at home dad. Duties included daily home upkeep, making the beds, doing laundry, sweeping or vacuuming, as needed as well as a thorough house cleaning once a week. I was also lucky to have another couple of boys to keep me busy, 6 months old and 4 years. The older child had autism required specialized attention. Around the same time I worked a couple of afternoons a week with a 6-year-old girl, meeting her when she got home from school and taking her to the library or park as well as age appropriate activities around the house. We did lots of crafts and practiced using our imaginations, as long as school work was done! Dad and the boys decided to move and unfortunately I could not continue to nanny for them. However I was given a wonderful opportunity to assist in a trip to northern Thailand where we lived in an orphanage and were blessed to teach 70 school age children drama and dance, it was a wonderful experience! The next summer I volunteered as a camp counselor at Camp Shawnee, a camp aimed at children living in poverty in eastern Kentucky. I was responsible 24/7 for 10 to 20 children at a time in every activity from morning teeth brushing to swimming and hiking in the afternoon and reading them a bedtime story at night. Another great experience. I have since become a full-time volunteer with the same organization that runs the summer camp and have had an enriching year. When I started thinking about what was next I had no hesitation in knowing I wanted to nanny again, it is truly the best job a person could ask
